As you approach your due date, your body is doing extraordinary work, and your mind is likely focused on what’s ahead. While nothing can fully predict how your individual labour will unfold, there’s growing recognition of how targeted movement and breathing practice in the weeks before birth can support a smoother labour experience and aid recovery afterward.
The Physical Demands of Labour
Labour is, among other things, an intense physical event requiring stamina, strength, and the ability to work with your body rather than against it. Women who enter labour with good muscular endurance, hip mobility, and breath control often report feeling more capable of coping with its demands, regardless of how their birth ultimately unfolds.
Hip Mobility and Optimal Positioning
In the final weeks of pregnancy, hip mobility becomes increasingly important. Tight hip flexors or restricted hip rotation can limit your ability to find comfortable positions during labour and may affect your baby’s ability to move into an optimal position for birth.
At InnerCore, our late-pregnancy sessions focus significantly on hip opening exercises, gentle mobility work, and movements that encourage healthy positioning. The reformer allows us to work through these ranges with support, which is particularly valuable when your growing bump and loosened ligaments make some movements more challenging to control independently.
Breath as Your Labour Tool
We’ve long emphasised breathing as foundational to our Pilates approach, and this becomes especially relevant as you prepare for birth. The controlled, rhythmic breathing patterns practised throughout your pregnancy sessions are directly transferable to labour.
Learning to breathe through intensity, to stay present rather than tensing against sensation, and to use long exhales to encourage relaxation are skills built through consistent practice—not something you can simply decide to do for the first time during contractions. Many of our clients specifically credit this breathing practice as one of their most valuable tools during birth, regardless of whether they pursued an unmedicated or medicated approach.
Pelvic Floor Readiness
Interestingly, labour preparation isn’t only about strengthening your pelvic floor—it’s equally about learning to fully release and relax these muscles. A pelvic floor that’s chronically gripped or tense can actually impede the descent of your baby during the pushing stage.
In your sessions, we work on this releasing capacity alongside strength, ensuring your pelvic floor can do both jobs: supporting you throughout pregnancy and yielding effectively when the time comes.
Maintaining Stamina Without Overexertion
Late pregnancy brings its own physical limitations—reduced lung capacity as your diaphragm is pushed upward, increased fatigue, and general discomfort. Our approach during this stage focuses on maintaining strength and stamina without pushing you into overexertion. Every exercise is modified appropriately, and we listen closely to how you’re feeling each session.
Practical Positions for Labour
Many of the positions and movements we explore during late-pregnancy Pilates sessions mirror positions that can be helpful during labour itself: supported squatting, gentle pelvic tilting, and various hip-opening stretches. Becoming familiar and comfortable with these movements beforehand means they feel natural rather than foreign when you need them most.
A Calm Space Before the Storm
Beyond the physical preparation, the final weeks of pregnancy can be an emotionally charged time—filled with anticipation, anxiety, and sometimes impatience. Your weekly session provides a calm, focused space to connect with your body and your baby before the intensity of labour and the whirlwind of early parenthood begin.
