If the first trimester was a matter of survival, managing nausea, exhaustion, and the strange unreality of early pregnancy, the second trimester often arrives like a welcome exhale. Energy tends to return, nausea eases for many women, and the bump is becoming visible but hasn’t yet created the physical discomforts of late pregnancy. For many women, this is the best time to establish or deepen a Pilates practice.
Why the Second Trimester Is Prime Time for Pilates
Between roughly weeks 14 and 27, most women are past the highest risk period of the first trimester, physically capable of more sustained movement, and not yet dealing with the breathlessness, pelvic girdle pain, and discomfort that sometimes accompanies the third trimester.
This window is genuinely valuable. The strength and body awareness you build now will carry you through the more physically demanding final months and support your body through labour and recovery. Starting during the second trimester means you can establish good technique, build meaningful strength, and develop breath and pelvic floor habits before the final sprint.
What Changes in Your Programme
By the second trimester, we avoid exercises performed flat on your back for extended periods, as the weight of the uterus can compress the vena cava and reduce blood flow. The reformer’s inclined positions and the variety of seated, standing, and side lying exercises mean we can work effectively without this restriction.
We also begin to pay closer attention to how your changing centre of gravity is affecting your movement patterns, addressing any compensations in posture or gait that could create discomfort as your bump grows.
Core Work: What’s Safe and What Isn’t
One of the most common questions we receive from second trimester clients is about core training. The answer is nuanced. We continue to train your deep core, your transverse abdominis and pelvic floor, throughout pregnancy, because this is precisely the support system your growing uterus relies on.
What we step away from is high load flexion exercises that create excessive intra abdominal pressure or visible “coning” through your midline. In practice, this means a shift toward lateral and rotational core stability work, which is both safer and more functional for the demands of pregnancy.
Supporting Your Changing Posture
As your bump grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward, your lumbar curve increases, and your upper back begins to round under the weight of enlarging breasts and the postural adaptation to a growing belly. Left unaddressed, these changes can contribute to lower back pain, pelvic girdle discomfort, and neck tension.
At InnerCore, we work proactively on these patterns throughout the second trimester, strengthening your upper back, supporting your lumbar spine, and keeping your hips mobile and balanced, preventing discomfort before it develops rather than managing it once it’s established.
Hip Mobility as Investment in Your Third Trimester
The hip opening and rotational work we build into second trimester sessions isn’t just about feeling better now, it’s preparing your pelvis and surrounding musculature for the third trimester and for labour itself. Greater hip mobility supports better fetal positioning, more comfort during late pregnancy, and more options for movement during labour.
The Emotional Dimension of Mid Pregnancy Movement
The second trimester is also often when pregnancy becomes more emotionally real, the bump is visible, you may have started sharing your news, and the reality of impending parenthood begins to land more fully. Movement during this time can be a powerful way to stay connected with your body as something strong and capable, an important counterpoint to the feeling of your body “belonging” to the pregnancy.
At InnerCore in Chelsea, we work with second trimester clients who are newly pregnant and those who’ve been with us since before conception. Wherever you’re starting, we design a programme that meets you in this particular moment of your pregnancy. Reach out to discuss how we can support you through what can be the most energetic and enjoyable phase of your pregnancy journey.
